Unique decor and gifts from reclaimed materials
hand made with love and patience
A little more about my shop, my projects and my foraging escapades
What exactly is Foraged and who is Barbara?
Unique home decor and accessories made from reclaimed materials
I'm Barbara Tomkins and I am the owner of Foraged. I design, create and sell unique items from materials I find foraging. I've always been a collector, an artist and an entrepreneur and this is a wonderful way to combine my passions. I am having a blast coming up with new ideas and helping to keep our world a little bit cleaner by reusing materials that would be discarded.
I hope you like what you see here!
Well it really started with a pile of slate
Some antique shutters and that driftwood
You see I couldn't just let this slate end up in the landfill. I knew I could do something with it. Make something cool. But how many slate message boards or serving trays does one girl really need?
Then there were the antique shutters I found in the barn in Maine...
Do you see a pattern here?
My love of foraging, collecting, decorating and art led me to create this business! Now I have a way to combine my passions and share them with you.
What do you do with a bunch of old kitchen cabinets?
Build a home workshop - of course
What do you do when you're in the middle of a home renovation and you have a kitchen full of halfway decent cabinets that you can't use?
Save them for a year or two knowing that they are the starting point for your home workshop. Draw tons of pictures on your vision board and you guess what. It happened!
Time to start Foraged?
You can't let that workshop go unused
So I started spending a lot of time in that workshop and I made slate things and antique shutter bulletin boards and I borrowed all my husband's tools and got more tools from my dad's workshop and garage sales. And I learned how to drill slate and clean off mortar and I had a pile of finished products that look pretty good.
What should I do with all this stuff?
Maybe it's time to try to sell my creations
Now I'm having a blast in that workshop and the piles of finished products are reaching the ceiling and I am complaining to my sister and she says "you should do this craft fair in Gloucester." And that was it! I was hooked.
Ok it was really scary at first - having strangers check out my things, putting a price on my creations. It was tough to put myself out there. But I'm so glad I did!
Where can you find my creations now?
Craft fairs, Etsy and a few local shops
So I did that first craft fair. And did fairly well but I had a few things left in the back of my car. I'm not sure how I got up the nerve, but I went into a local store and the owner was nice and we chatted a bit and then I asked her if she wanted to see my things. This became my first retail account.
Then I opened my Etsy shop - http://www.etsy.com/shop/ForagedDecor
Then I signed up for a whole bunch of craft fairs.
And I kept coming up with more ideas.
And that's where I am today.
Busy, happy, and creating.
So what's with the tree?
Everyone has a tree as their logo.
I know there are a lot of trees as logos out there, but this is a special tree. It's the tree I see when I wake up in my very special place in Kittery Point, Maine. It makes me smile no matter what the weather and brings me peace and creativity.
Just thought you might want to know!
